Mr.Ian Groves.
If your still reading these pages.Your uncle Ian Dobson appears (though only in a line of stats) in my latest book on the GB national teams exploits in tournaments. For official play in World/European/Olympic events your Uncle had certainly played for team GB.

Very interesting reading. I lived in England for 1 year and played for the Oxford. I played for 3 teams. The Comets (U16), Satellites (2nd Division), and the Stars (1st Division). I was on the team with Jimmy Shand, Tom Smith, and Urban Johansen as the 3 imports. I also had the unfortunate honor of playing in the infamous 50-0 game between Oxford and Solihull. If anyone has any questions about that game, I played in it and I tell the story to my school kids every year. Nothing like a 50-0 drubbing to talk about for the ages.

Keep up the good work!

Just browsing the site (first time in a while) and have just noticed that on the All Star teams there are only 6 out of a possible 24 that are British born (only 1 out of 12 for the Elite league). How sad is that? I thought we were trying to improve the skills of UK born players? we seem to be running a league where 'has beens' can come at the end of their careers and make just a little bit more money.

Just how many of the British Ice Hockey team are British?

I'm glad I watch ENL hockey and hope that someday we don't make it to the heights of EPL.

Ice History
Thanks for all your efforts. This is very interesting as I'm a Canadian, moved to the UK in 1989. I played ice hockey to the JR B level for the St Mary's Lincoln's, as a goal tender & had a try out for the London Knights JR A.
I will pass this information to my friend and see if any of the name's ring a bell.
I will also make some enquires through my Canadian contacts and see if I can find a little more about the individuals.
As or if I get any further information I'll pass it on through this forum.
Many thanks once again.
Regards
Bill

Bill

I was able to down-load and print off the RAF team photo, and by comparision with the RAF team photo in the 'IHWA 1950/51' I'm fairly certain of the identity of six of the players as follows:-

Standing left to right: unknown; L. Wallace; Dave Evans; unknown; J.Adams.
Kneeling left to right: G.Cooper; E. Chabot; E.Ripley; unknown; unknown.

In the photo in the 'IHWA' are the other names I cannot match up with your photo, who are - J.Forster, J. Davies, Roy Thompson - coach (a professional Canadain player with Wembley), E.Zelenitsky and J. Brown.

I was hoping your photo had been published in the weekly 'IHWs' but although I looked through all issues for seasons 1948/49 and 1949/50 - the two seasons the RAF entered a team in competition it did not appear.

I would suspect that the majority of the players were Canadians serving at that time in the RAF.

Hope this is some help to you and your friend.

Ice History,
Thanks again for the up date. I'll pass the two names and the year on to my mate and see if it means anything to the family.
I hope we get get a few more names. If you want me to poto copy, both front and back, of the picture and posted to you, should you not be able to print it off.
Thanks again for your help and we'll speak again.
Have a great New Year.
Bill

Bill & Stu

That is not the photo I was expecting to see. It is a different grouping from the one that was published in the ' Ice Hockey World Annual 1950/51' for which I have the names. So it's from the previous season ie 1949/50 when the RAF won the Southern Intermediate League. However at a quick glance I can place a couple. The chap with the C on his chest is Dave Evans and the one bottom left with the helmet is G. Cooper.

Without the photo you have scanned in alongside the one I have in the IHW I cannot compare and ID the other players. If I can print off the one from your link then I'll have a better chance, so hope I can do that, and if I can I'll post the result on here in the next few days.
